Acts of Restoration: Photographing Cultural Returned Objects for the Chumash Tribe

This was such an honor. I got to photograph a series of portraits of the Chumash Museum Board Directors holding cultural items that had been returned to them after years of being on displayed at other institutions. Items their ancestors made thousands of years ago were now being held in their hands. It was a beautiful moment of restoration that I got to witness. Can’t show the items/portraits here…but you might see them when the Museum opens.
Thanks to a great team, Ana Maria, Megan (thanks for the handling of all Museums Collections), Felicia and Chris Williams on lighting expert. Always good to work and visit with Museum Director James Bier, and Nick Gianis-Museum Operations Manager.

I always love coming to the Santa Inez Valley - such beauty…and I always stop by the Ocean on my way back to give thanks for the opportunity.

On the cover of the Chumash Magazine

Just got a copy of the Chumash Magazine with the Museum on the cover. One I took with my drone. I’m totally in love with this project!! the building is gorgeous and it has been done with such care to represent in every aspect of its structure the Chumash Culture. Grateful.

Visit with Ruby - from the ongoing project 'Decoding Bodhi' - 2021, digital photograph

As I’ve turned my lens towards my adolescent step daughter, I’ve entered her inner world in ways I did not see before. Her matter of fact sense of self and the richness of her unique expression-which had been masked under layers of anxiety and behaviors once hard to decode for me as a parent-have begun to come undone painting a broader picture of this period of great transition and transformation in her life (and during C19). Light and shadows representing what I am allow to see at the present moment and what is yet to become visible. In some way, her process is a reflection of mine; I have become comfortable in the not knowing and letting things be, as an extension of me, the camera shows me what is ready to be revealed. It is the magic of the process.

I am pleased to say your image is one of those selected to be in the Arles Poster Exhibition.
Many thanks,

Work Show Grow

Dispatch Exhibition online view

Dispatch exhibition brings together sixty two Work Show Grow artists sending important information around the world. Twenty one artists created work during an artist residency in the New Forest, UK. The works were then despatched to forty two collaborating artists inviting them to respond to what they found within an A5 envelope. The work was posted onto a third artist to continue reinterpreting and reimagining the original piece. These works were then sent back to the New Forest as a final destination.

Neighbourhood Tales is part of a giant photo mosaic created by The People’s Picture

So happy to be part of this massive wonderful project with some of the photos from Neighbourhood Tales - the project I created during lockdown in London.

This mass-participation project, set up at the beginning of the March 2020 lockdown, received over 40,000 photo submissions from 90+ countries, sharing people’s experiences living through a pandemic.

A giant photo mosaic created by The People’s Picture was unveiled as part of the #massisolationFORMAT project at FORMAT21 International Photography Festival. The online interactive high resolution 180 giga pixel image is composed of a total of 180,574 photos. When the viewer zooms in they are able to see the individual photos from #massisolationFORMAT up close and in detail.

The images came from a wide range of people – photographers, professionals, amateurs, members of the public – and came together as a large scale photo mosaic installed at Quad, Derby to celebrate our collective emergence into the ‘new normal’. Chosen by FORMAT, the photograph Lovers was shot by Argentian photographers Luisa Magdalena and Nahuel Alfonso and inspired by Renè Magritte’s painting Les Amants. A double self-portrait, created in response to the Covid19 pandemic, its painterly quality with its youthful optimism of young love.

Natasha Cuarana, an artist from UK started this venture during lockdown and it’s been the best. Learning and growing with other peers, safe space, loads of interesting opportunities and shared knowledge. this is our first publication.

Judy Hillman - Our Neighbour

While I was working on the Neighbourhood Tales project - I visited Judy, a neighbour had met her on the Park and had asked her to participate - she invited me up to her flat and we had the most interesting chat about her life. She was a journalist for many years and in her later days she begun doing art in the local council house - She seemed happy and content with her life. A few weeks later, I found out she had suddenly passed away. I was able to track her family down and share with them the interview and photos of her. Even though we shared only a few hours, somehow her suden death touched me so deeply. I revisited my afternoon with her in search of any signs that I could have missed about someone nearing the end of her life. But I couldn’t think of it that way. I was touched with the way she seemed to have lived her life doing what she loved. She said, she didn’t have children because the world was her family and children. I loved that.

We are only beginning to learn what to say in a photograph. The world we live in is a succession of fleeting moments, any one of which might say something significant.

Neighbourhood Tales - Stories of our community in Lockdown & a Concert!

This Project filled my heart like any other. The sense of community, connection and collaboration I experienced was truly a gift - And the talent of the village!! Please click the button below to listen to the concert.

I was living in London when COVID came into our lives. I began to take my daily walks with camera-in-hand. While respecting social distance, I talked and interviewed my neighbours to hear their stories and help create community.

Soon I noticed music was pouring out from the various flats, I could hear violins, piano and some singing - the idea of a concert in lockdown started to form. Filming people from the street, the same way I photographed them, while they would perform from their window or door step. In some cases, we provided the camera/sound equipment for them to bring inside their flats while we remotely operated the camera - All the performances were edited into a one hour film, which then we streamed live and use it to collect funds for local charities. It was the best experience of my life!!

We fell in love with this photo published in Vogue in 1953 (photographed by John Rawlings) of a model that looks like Grace Kelly wearing a Claire McCardell one piece bathing suit. It represents a classic elegance that marries perfectly with the concept we were developing for the next COMPAS ad.

Shooting ice for COMPAS

Sometimes you got to fail before you succeed! I have to say, I really liked this picture of the broken ice ...but it didn't make the cut!  Check the real one on my website for the final picture under Tearsheets.
